About me

The Juneteenth Handbook Blog also represented by the Juneteenth Handbook website, and Pinterest pages were started by me to collect and share history related to the Juneteenth Day Celebration. In 1996 I created and directed an award-winning documentary about Juneteenth history and celebration titled A Time to be Remembered, A Juneteenth Story.

The ideas for the Juneteenth Handbook came to me after my trip to Hollywood to accept the First Place Documentary award at the 1997 Black American Cinema Society 15th Student & Independent Filmmaker Awards Show. After accepting the award, it occurred to me that a lot of useful and interesting Juneteenth history information had to be left on the cutting room floor due to production deadlines, and time restrictions. The Juneteenth Handbook allowed me to share all of the interesting Juneteenth histories I was able to collect.

This blog was started to share some of the overflow information that did not make into the final cut of my documentary and docudrama. The Juneteenth Day Celebration is thought of as an African American celebration, but my research showed me that the Juneteenth Day Celebration is actually an American celebration since so many of the people (the abolitionist) responsible for helping to bring slavery to an end in the U.S., were not African American.
